Critical work has been carried out on Redcar Seafront to protect and secure people, homes and businesses against the risk of coastal flooding and coastal erosion.
The new defences have been built to cope with changes in sea levels, which are predicted to rise by about 85cm over the next hundred years. This was highlighted in spring 2010 when a storm surge caused very high tides and showed the damage that these can lead to, leaving big holes in large sections of the seawall.
The sea defence has been funded and managed by the Environment Agency and will stretch for 2.7km, from Coatham to the eastern end of the Stray and is intended to reduce coastal erosion and flood risk for the next 100 years.
After major consultation, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council took the opportunity to work in partnership with the Environment Agency to revamp the promenade areas to enhance the seafront for residents and increase the number of visitors.
The striking design of the promenade has taken inspiration from Redcar’s nautical heritage. The promenade has many attractive features appealing to all ages, including new leisure spaces with a water feature and show rides. Fountains & Features Ltd, worked in partnership with the main contractors, Birse Coastal Ltd, to build and install a water feature that everyone will be able to enjoy all year round, not just in the summer.
